MIME types tell browsers how to identify specific extensions. For example, the text/html MIME type is the same as the .htm, .html, and .shtml extensions on most servers, and it asks the browser to interpret all files with these extensions as HTML files. MIME types are often used to identify new technologies as they appear. When WAP technology appeared, no one had these extensions configured on the server. However, with MIME types, you could have configured it yourself and started displaying WAP pages immediately.
